Top 10 Oz Characters and Costume Ideas – The Wicked Witch of the West

Miss Gulch – The Wicked Witch of the West

The ORIGINAL Woman behind the Warts
Margaret Hamilton, the actress, is as fascinating as the character of the Wicked Witch. She was given the role when another actress, Gale Sondergaard, refused to wear the make-up that would make her look ugly.  During the filming of “The Wizard of Oz,” Margaret was severely burned during a take of the scene where the witch makes a fiery exit from Munchkinland. She suffered second degree burns to her face and third degree burns to her hand. She was out of work for six weeks, and when she came back to the set she refused to do any more scenes involving fire. Wikipedia says, “The character ranks No. 4 in the American Film Institute’s list of the 50 Best Movie Villains of All Time, making her the highest ranking female villain, as well as placing 90th on Empire’s 100 Greatest Movie Characters of All Time.”

This infamous green-skinned witch dressed in a long black dress with a black pointed hat has become the most mimicked super-villains of all time and still manages to terrorize the children of today.

Becoming the Wicked Witch of the West
You Will Need:

Green Face Makeup
Black Witches Hat
Black Pointy Boots
Black Dress
Silver Buttons

The WWW does require face and hand makeup. We recommend that you first do a test run on your arm to make sure you do not have any nasty allergic reactions. This might make you look truly wicked but will make you wish you would melt. You can find face makeup and most any costume shops or online.
After you find the right makeup, start on the clothing. The Wicked Witch of the West wears a long-sleeved black dress with silver buttons up the front. Use a dress or a skirt and shirt combination. A great place to look would be your local Goodwill shop. Glue or sew silver buttons from the neck to the waist. Wear a pointed black witches hat and carry a broom.

We have provided a video that might be helpful in your transformation. Don’t forget to cackle and add “and your little dog too!” whenever you can!
